Stock (share) — definition & meaning

A unit of ownership in a company.

A stock, or share, represents part-ownership of a company. Own shares and you own a slice of the business, with a claim on its assets and sometimes dividends.

Share prices move with company results, news and overall market mood. Traders may buy shares outright or get exposure to their price via CFDs, which is leveraged and does not confer ownership.
