Exponential moving average (EMA) — definition & meaning

A moving average that weights recent prices more heavily.

An EMA is a moving average that gives greater weight to the most recent prices, so it turns more quickly than a simple moving average.

Because it reacts faster, traders often prefer the EMA for shorter-term signals. The trade-off is that it can also produce more false signals in choppy markets.
