Volume — definition & meaning

The number of units traded over a period — a gauge of activity.

Volume is the total amount of an instrument traded during a given period. High volume means lots of participation; low volume means few traders are active.

Analysts use volume to judge conviction behind a move. A breakout on heavy volume is seen as stronger than one on light volume. In decentralised forex, brokers show tick volume (number of price changes) as a proxy.
