Spread betting — definition & meaning

A leveraged way to bet a stake per point on a market's direction.

Spread betting lets you stake an amount per point of movement on whether a market will rise or fall, without owning the asset. It is available mainly in the UK and Ireland.

Like CFDs it is leveraged and lets you go long or short. The main practical differences from CFDs are how it is structured and taxed in those regions; both carry a high risk of loss.
