Demo and live are genuinely different
It is extremely common for a strategy to look great on a demo account and then struggle with real money. This is not you imagining things, and it is not necessarily the broker rigging the demo. Demo and live differ in real, structural ways — some technical, and one very human.
Understanding the differences stops you from concluding either that you are hopeless or that the broker cheated. Usually it is neither.
The technical differences
On live accounts you experience real execution frictions that demos often smooth over: slippage on stops and entries in fast markets, requotes, variable spreads that widen around news, and swap charges applied exactly. Demo fills are frequently instant and ideal in ways live fills are not, which quietly flatters your results.
Latency and liquidity also bite in live conditions. A demo may fill you at the perfect price during a news spike; live, that same order might slip or be rejected. So a strategy that depends on flawless fills can look far better on demo than it ever will in reality.
The human difference (the big one)
The largest gap is emotional. On demo, nothing is at stake, so you follow your plan calmly, hold winners, and cut losers without flinching. The moment real money is on the line, fear and greed arrive: you close winners too early, hesitate on entries, move stops, and abandon the very plan that worked on demo.
This is why many people are consistently profitable on demo and then falter live. The strategy did not change; the trader did. Recognising this is the first step to managing it.
How to bridge the gap
Make demo more realistic: trade a demo balance close to the real amount you would use, so position sizes feel true; respect spreads and factor in swaps and likely slippage rather than assuming perfect fills; and follow every rule exactly as you would with real money.
