Why can't I close my trade?

Being unable to close a position is stressful. The reasons range from market hours and connection drops to serious broker red flags. Here is how to diagnose and act.

Work out which kind of problem it is

Not being able to close a trade falls into two very different buckets: ordinary technical or market reasons, and serious broker misconduct. Most cases are the first kind and are quickly resolved. But because a broker that blocks you from closing losing trades is a classic scam behaviour, it is worth diagnosing carefully.

Start with the error message or status, exactly as with any platform issue, and check the simple explanations before assuming the worst — or dismissing a genuine red flag.

The ordinary reasons

Common, harmless causes: the market for that instrument is closed (you often cannot close shares or indices outside their trading hours); your platform lost its connection, so the close order never reached the server; a fast-moving market is requoting or rejecting your close; or you are hitting a minimum-distance rule where a stop/limit is too close to the current price.

Fixes mirror other platform issues: confirm the market is open, check and restore your connection, allow a small slippage tolerance when closing in a fast market, and try again. In most cases the position closes on the next clean attempt.

The serious red flags

Be very alert if you can open trades but mysteriously cannot close profitable ones, if the platform freezes only when you try to take a profit or cut a loss, or if support tells you that you must deposit more before you can close or withdraw. These are not normal technical faults — they are hallmarks of a scam operation controlling your outcomes.

If you see this pattern, screenshot everything immediately — the open position, the failed close attempts, the times, and any messages — while you still have access.

What to do

For ordinary issues: contact the broker's support with the exact error and a screenshot, and keep a record if it recurs during important moments. A legitimate broker will resolve a genuine technical fault.

For the red-flag pattern: stop depositing, verify the firm on its regulator's official register, and if it fails that check or the blocking continues, escalate to the regulator and your bank following our guides on checking regulation and reporting a scam broker. Being unable to close a trade to your disadvantage, on demand, is not something to explain away.
